About the Holistic Nutrition Certification

This course is designed for anyone who wants to build a practical understanding of nutrition rather than simply memorize general dietary rules. You will explore what macronutrients and micronutrients do in the body, examine food additives and preservatives, and look more closely at everyday food choices such as juicing versus blending and grass-fed versus commercially produced meat, poultry, and eggs.

Who This Course Is For

Learners commonly take this course for one of two reasons: to develop useful nutrition knowledge for themselves and their families, or to add a foundation in nutrition to an existing fitness, coaching, or wellness career. For health coaches, personal trainers, and wellness practitioners, the program provides a structured introduction to nutrition concepts that can complement existing services. No science degree is listed as a prerequisite.

Study Format

The course is fully online and self-paced. Most learners complete it in two to four weeks while studying approximately one to two hours per day, although you have up to one year from enrollment to complete the certification. Course materials can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or mobile phone.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Understanding Your Scope of Practice

Nutrition professional reviewing a client wellness plan alongside referral resources

Understanding this distinction up front is part of practicing responsibly, whether you are using this knowledge personally or sharing it with others.

This certification documents your completion of the ExpertRating Holistic Nutrition Certification course. It is an educational certification and does not constitute a state license or authorize the practice of medicine, dietetics, or medical nutrition therapy.

There is no state license specifically for an ExpertRating-certified holistic nutrition professional. Laws governing nutrition services vary by state and may regulate the titles you can use, the advice you can provide, and whether you may offer individualized nutrition counseling. Before working with clients, you are responsible for checking the laws that apply where you and your clients are located.

Important Professional Guidance

This course provides education in holistic nutrition concepts, general nutrition information, menu planning, and lifestyle-related wellness topics.
It does not authorize you to diagnose, treat, cure, prevent, prescribe for, or manage a disease or medical condition.
It does not authorize you to provide medical nutrition therapy or to present yourself as a physician, dietitian, licensed nutritionist, or other regulated healthcare professional unless you separately hold the required credential or license.
Individuals who have a diagnosed medical condition, concerning symptoms, complex dietary needs, an eating disorder, or needs outside your qualifications should be encouraged to seek or continue care from an appropriately licensed physician, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, or other qualified healthcare provider.
This certification is separate from and does not lead to the Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential. RDN examination eligibility generally requires a graduate degree, completion of an ACEND-accredited education pathway, accredited supervised practice, and successful completion of the Commission on Dietetic Registration examination.
Holistic nutrition educators and wellness coaches can work collaboratively with licensed medical and dietetic professionals, providing general education and referring clients when their needs fall outside the educator’s qualifications or legally permitted scope.

Understanding these distinctions is an important part of using your knowledge responsibly, whether you are studying for personal development or incorporating general nutrition education into an existing wellness role.

Educational Notice: This information is educational and is not legal advice. Nutrition laws and professional regulations change over time, so learners should consult the relevant state licensing authority or a qualified attorney regarding their intended services.

Career Prospects for Holistic Nutritionists

Holistic nutritionists fall under the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics category of dietitians and nutritionists. The agency projects 6 percent employment growth for this group from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 6,200 openings projected each year, on average, over the decade.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Dietitians and Nutritionists (2024 to 2034 projections).

According to BLS data from May 2024, dietitians and nutritionists earn an average of $71,280 annually nationwide. Entry-level professionals with zero to two years of experience typically earn closer to $44,910, with earnings increasing as experience and specialization grow. Many holistic nutritionists working independently set their own rates, so income can vary significantly based on how you build your practice.

Holistic nutritionists work across a wide range of settings and career paths, including:

  • Fitness centers, gyms, and personal-training businesses
  • General health and wellness education
  • Community workshops and group wellness programs
  • Health-food retail and customer education
  • Meal-planning or meal-preparation businesses
  • Wellness content creation
  • General nutrition education within an existing coaching, fitness, or lifestyle practice
  • Independent wellness education or coaching, where legally permitted

If you already coach clients in fitness, wellness, or lifestyle change, this certification can add a structured nutrition layer to your existing practice, supporting workshops, group programs, or one-on-one guidance you already offer.

ACCREDITATION

Understanding Holistic Nutrition Credentials

When researching holistic nutrition, you may encounter the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, or NANP, and the Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® (BCHN®) credential overseen by the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board.

BCHN® is a separate professional credential with requirements that go beyond an introductory certification course. Applicants must meet current education and NANP membership requirements, complete the credentialing process, and pass the Board Exam in Holistic Nutrition. Full BCHN® status also requires 500 approved professional-experience contact hours. Eligible recent graduates may be permitted to take the exam before completing those hours and use the BCHN® (Candidate) designation while fulfilling the experience requirement.

ExpertRating Holistic Nutrition Certification is not affiliated with, approved by, or accredited by NANP or the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board. Completing this course does not qualify you for NANP Professional membership, the BCHN® examination, or the BCHN® credential.

This course is designed as an accessible introduction to holistic nutrition. It can help you build foundational knowledge, explore your interest in the field, and decide whether to pursue more advanced education later.

Anyone who wishes to pursue BCHN® status must complete a separate qualifying educational program and meet all NANP and HNCB requirements in effect at that time.

This certification does not provide professional licensure or authorization to offer regulated nutrition services.
