Networking is cost effective, fast, efficient, quick, mobile and convenient for a small office.

Networking is the method by which two or more computing devices can be linked together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are developed by mixing computer hardware and computer software. Networking can help you to reorganize the office, share music files and printers. The Networking course will provide you tips and give a comprehensive understanding of the tools and techniques which will get you started with setting up a network. There are two kinds of network available; wired networks which use Ethernet (CAT-5) cables to connect to networked components and wireless networks which use Wi-Fi which is a wireless communication standard.

The ExpertRating Networking Certification will help you easily set up a network at home, in the office or in schools.

ExpertRating Online Computer Networking Course (Office Network) Coverage (6 weeks program)

Week One

Wednesday - Lesson 01

Windows XP Professional Edition provides all the tools you need to connect the computers in your office so they can easily share printers, Internet connections, drives, and documents. But where do you start? This lesson will talk about the history of networking, the different types of networks available, and the advantages of creating a network. You'll also find out what hardware you need to construct your network.

Friday - Lesson 02

Now that you know what hardware you need, it's time for the fun part—picking up your network kit from the store and hooking up your computers. But before you do that, this lesson will show you how to use Windows XP Professional Edition to determine what hardware you already have in your computers. This lesson will also cover laying out cables and connecting the Network Interface Cards (NICs) in your network computers. And this lesson will delve into setting up a hub to connect your computers, and hooking up your network to the Internet.

Week Two

Wednesday - Lesson 03

The hardware is connected, and now you have to tell Windows XP how to connect your computers to form a network. Don't worry—Windows XP Professional Edition makes it easy, and in this lesson you'll find out exactly what you need to do. You'll learn how to use the New Connection Wizard to build connections, configure your NIC, install and configure protocols, and use the built-in Network Troubleshooter for help if you run into any roadblocks.

Friday - Lesson 04

This lesson continues with the set up process, and then shows you how to coordinate a sort of meet-and–greet for your computers, compliments of the Network Setup Wizard. Most importantly, you'll learn how to create a Network Setup Disk so you can transfer the network settings to all the computers in your network, ensuring they'll communicate correctly—even if some computers are running older versions of Windows!

Week Three

Wednesday - Lesson 05-

At last, your network is set up and your computers can talk to each other. But how do you configure Windows XP Professional Edition so the right people can—and the wrong people can't—log on to your network and share network resources? In this lesson, you'll find out. You'll discover how to authenticate users and create new accounts and passwords. Then you'll learn how to share files and even set up a network drive so you can easily access a directory on your computer or another computer on the network.

Friday - Lesson 06

The ability to use a single Internet connection from any computer in your network is a wonderful thing. But a Windows XP network also lets any user—on any computer in the network—connect to his or her personal e-mail address. So how do you set that up? This lesson walks you through establishing Internet and e-mail connections—from planning and establishing access, to using Windows XP's built-in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express tools to surf the Web and exchange e-mail.

Week Four

Wednesday - Lesson 07

In this lesson you'll learn how to use built-in Windows tools to manage Internet services and protocols, and set up the built-in Windows Firewall to keep hackers out. This lesson will also explore Windows' built-in instant messaging tools—Windows Messenger and NetMeeting—so you can collaborate with other network users online.

Friday - Lesson 08

This lesson is all about sharing files and folders with other users in your network. You'll learn how to manipulate, move, and copy them from one computer to another, and how to publish your files to the Web! And if you need to connect to another network to get files—or even to use an online storage service—these too you'll learn in this lesson.

Week Five

Wednesday - Lesson 09

Building on your previous lesson, in this lesson you'll gain greater control over your files and folders. You'll learn how to access shared files, and how to share folders on your computer with others. You'll find out how to enable others to make changes to shared folders or restrict them to only reading them. You'll also discover how to set access for peripherals connected to your computer, such as a CD-ROM drive. Finally, you'll see how to use the Windows Offline Tools feature to work on files when you're not on the network, and then upload those changed files when you log back on to it!

Friday - Lesson 10

One advantage to having a network is that all the people in your office can use one peripheral that's connected to it. In this lesson, you'll learn how to connect, set up, and use perhaps the most important peripheral in your network—the printer. You'll also find out how to set up and use other network peripherals using the Add Hardware Wizard.

Week Six

Wednesday - Lesson 11

Though Windows XP makes it easier to operate and maintain your network than ever before, the system isn't foolproof, and Microsoft understands this. So, in this lesson you'll learn how to use the built-in diagnostics tools in Windows XP Professional Edition to determine how your computer and network are functioning. You'll discover how to check your network card, use Administrative Tools, maintain your disk properties, and view performance and event statistics.

Friday - Lesson 12

In this grand finale, this lesson will talk about perhaps the most important aspect of networking—security. You'll learn how to establish network security measures and use the built-in Windows Security Center to maintain the Windows Firewall. This lesson will also cover other security measures including Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), password protecting your computer, and using anti-virus programs. By the time this lesson is finished, you'll know how to keep your network and its data secure from evildoers.
