About the

Dixie Mahaffie first became intrigued with Braille while attending
elementary school. At sixteen, she became a Braille Transcriber for
a metropolitan school district. In 1984, she received a Masters of
Science Degree in Education with a Certification for Teaching the
Visually Impaired, and she began work as a Braille instructor at a
State Department of Services for the Blind. Mahaffie currently works
as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and an Orientation and Mobility
Instructor. She conducts several accredited college-level Braille courses
for sighted individuals and has helped many students achieve their goal of
becoming Braille transcribers.

Lesson 2 will
take a deeper look at the whole word
contractions and, of, for, the, and with. You'll
learn how they can be joined together within
sentences and how they can be used as parts of

Wednesday - Lesson 03 |

In this lesson,
you'll learn about three different types of
contractions. First this lesson will examine the
part word contractions for ch, sh, th, wh, ou,
and st. Then this lesson will explore the whole
word contractions for the words child, shall,
this, which, out, and still. And finally, this
lesson will look at the lower cell contractions
for in, en, be, con, com, and dis. |

Friday - Lesson 04 |
|
Lesson 4 will go over the rules for lower cell
contractions. You'll also learn the whole word
contractions for in, enough, be, his, was, and were;
and the part word contractions for ar, ed, er, gh,
ow, ble, and ing. |

Week Three |
Wednesday - Lesson 05- |
|
In
lesson 5 you'll learn the lower cell whole word
contractions for to, into, and by, and the lower
cell part word contractions for bb, cc, dd, ff, and
gg. You'll also get some practice finding braille
errors. |

Friday - Lesson 06 |
|
Lesson 6 will concentrate on the short form, whole
word contractions for the words about, above,
according, across, after, afternoon, afterward,
again, against, almost, already, also, although,
altogether, and always. You’ll also start studying
what are informally called dot contractions. There
are whole word and part word dot contractions.
You'll start with the contractions for the words
character, day, ever, father, here, know, lord,
mother, and name. |

This lesson will review braille numbers, including
the use of decimal points and commas. In addition,
you'll learn the dot 5 whole word contractions for
the words one, ought, part, question, right, some,

|
In
lesson 8 you'll continue your study of whole word
and part word contractions. You'll learn the short
form whole word contractions for because, before,
behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond,
blind, braille, children, conceive, conceiving,
could deceive, deceiving, declare, and declaring.
You'll also learn the dot 4-5 whole word
contractions for these, those, upon, whose, and
word. |

This lesson will
examine the short form word contractions for
either, first, friend, good, great, herself,
him, and himself. In addition, this lesson will
discuss the dot 4-5-6 whole word contractions

|
Lesson 10 introduces the dot 4-6 part word
contractions for ance, ound, ount, and sion; and the
dot 6 part word contractions for ally and ation.
You'll also study the whole word contractions for

o'clock, oneself, and ourselves. |

you'll finish your study of the short form
whole word contractions. The contractions
this lesson will look at include the words

your, yourself, and yourselves. |
